LionWhale music was founded in 2006 by Jennifer Hummler, Jim Green, and Steve Bowen. The group met while studying music at Monmouth University at the dawn of the twenty-first century. After graduating, they found that the quality of music education offered by many teachers—both studio teachers and private ones—was grossly insufficient. Studios didn’t even require their teachers to have any advanced training in music. Jen, Jim, and Steve saw this as an opportunity to bring together the highest-quality music teachers they could find and change the standard of music education, starting with New Jersey.

Since 2006, the LionWhale staff has tripled. We now offer lessons in piano, voice, guitar, bass, drums, violin, and most traditional school band instruments. Our ambition is to provide the best-quality music education possible with the most-qualified teachers. Students receive a background in the instrument they choose and an understanding of the real inner workings of music. And our staff comes directly to the student, bringing a real understanding of music—not simply proficiency in playing one instrument.

We feel extremely lucky to spend our time passing down a craft we care so much about.
